OUR  HISTORY

About San Francisco Christian School

Mr. Jack McBirney returned to San Francisco in 1971 after serving as a missionary to Newfoundland, Canada. His children had to attend public school. Because of the obstacles his family met, Mr. McBirney became burdened by the lack of Christian education in the beautiful city of San Francisco.

With a vision to see, a faith to believe and courage to do so, he founded San Francisco Christian School in September of 1971. The need for this Christian education was realized by both Mr. Jack McBirney and the Board, and they prayed for 90 students to come to the school. On the very first day, 90 students came and enrolled! We went on to become one of the area's best private international high schools. It is our true belief that affordable private education should be available to everyone in San Francisco, CA.

Our Beginning

Our school first began with grades K-10 on Dorland Street in the educational building at First Covenant Church. Junior and Senior High School was moved into the Calvary Baptist Church in the fall of 1972, where 11th and 12th grades were added to our program. In 1973, San Francisco Christian School’s first group of scholars graduated.  Since 1973, our staff and faculty have helped our international school become of one of the best private high schools in the San Francisco, CA area.

Attendance and enrollment continued to grow with each passing year. This increase called for the construction of our school on Whittier Street in 1976. Our district was incorporated into the ministry of Calvary Baptist Church in 1984. Today, we are one of the best private high schools in the San Francisco Bay Area providing an International admissions program and a Christian education while also encouraging students to participate in athletics, music, art, and community service

Our Vision for Affordable Private Education

One of the reasons our Christian education in San Francisco, CA has become so popular is because of our heart for missions and world evangelism. Our international school helps those in San Francisco, CA, but we also reach the uttermost parts of the world through the enrollment of non-immigrant foreign students. In the fall of 1996, San Francisco Christian School was approved by the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service to issue I‑20 forms for foreign students to attend school. Our international program reaches these students with the message of Jesus Christ, so they can return to their home countries and families with the Gospel. We hope to inform students from around the world that they can learn the story of Jesus Christ and receive an amazing education. They can achieve this through the international program at SFCS. • Higher Academic Standards: Studies indicate that private education provides a more challenging academic environment than other institutions. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, private educational facilities list more vigorous academic standards than their public counterparts, with more coursework required. The result, upon graduation, is that our students tend to perform better on tests and show a higher level of written, mathematic, and verbal ability.

  • Small Class Sizes: It is no secret that the San Francisco area is home to a large population of people; unfortunately, this can sometimes reflect in the classroom.
